What is vaginal pH?

For example, during your fertile years (ages 15 to 49), a healthy vaginal pH is considered to be below or equal to 4.5. However, before menstruation and after menopause, a healthy vaginal pH must be slightly higher than 4.5.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV): It is a bacterial overgrowth problem that generally results in a "fishy" odour, along with an unusual grey, white, or yellow vaginal discharge. It can also lead to vaginal itchiness and a burning sensation during urination. 

While Bacterial vaginosis isn't harmful, women having this vaginal condition are at an increased risk of contracting other severe infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes simplex virus, and even HIV.

Trichomoniasis (trich): A sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Although trichomoniasis doesn't have its symptoms, it can put you at risk for more serious STDs, like HIV. 

On the contrary, an acidic vagina significantly decreases your risk of contracting these diseases. However, if the acidity rises too much, it can reduce your fertility because sperms thrive in an alkaline condition, and they need a pH between 7.0 and 8.5 to swim and reach the egg. 

How is unbalanced vaginal pH caused?

Following are some common reasons that can change your vaginal ph level:

• Unprotected intercourse: As the semen is alkaline, it can increase the pH of your vagina and encourage the growth of certain bacteria.

• Too many antibiotics: Antibiotics kill not only the bad bacteria you want to get rid of but also the good bacteria you need to maintain a healthy vaginal pH level.

• Douching: About 20% of women regularly rinse their vagina with a mixture of water and vinegar, baking soda, or iodine. Doctors don’t recommend this cleaning method because it increases the vaginal pH level and encourages the growth of harmful bacteria.

• Menstruation: As menstrual blood has a basic pH, it raises the vaginal pH. Mainly when the blood gets absorbed into a tampon or pad and sits in place for long hours, it increases the pH level of the vagina.
